What is the Fausto Summer Solstice Triathlon?

The fausto summer solstice triathlon took place on June 21st in Roker, Sunderland and was ran by Go Tri Sunderland and Fausto Coffee. The event began at a fresh 05:30 am, much to the delight of I'm sure every athlete and marshal. However, this unique start time offered a magical backdrop to such an enjoyable event. We were met with calm seas, blue skies and a surprise visit by a pack of dolphins just as the race began. There was the option of competing in the full event (300m sea swim, 6km bike and 2.5km run) or rallying the troops in threes to compete in a relay-style triathlon where each competitor completes one discipline The swim was a chilly but stunning jaunt between the two piers, the bike took the athletes along the coastal road with a cheeky climb in there or good measure and the run stretched all the way along the pier and back for quite the remarkable view.

Sun, Sea, Smiles & Bling

For our first relay event as a triathlon club, we got together three teams to enjoy the event. The enthusiasm and sportsmanship of all athletes created such a positive environment for all. A massive thanks to Alistair, Sarah, Grant, and Brian for coming down to watch and support so early on a Friday. It was also a great learning experience for all of our athletes, as they were informed about relay triathlon etiquette and got to practice their skills at the same time. Richard, Ellen, and Steven all tackled the swim which as a chilly wake-up call for sure! Michelle B, Michelle H, and Gill took the bike leg and did everyone proud with their rides. Finally, Paul, Colin, and Mel had the run leg out along the pier, although we heard there was some sneaky wind on the way back. Perks of living on the coast. One of our teams unexpectedly won first prize for the relay event which everybody was very excited about. The hospitality from all the marshals and staff from Faustos were second to none. The medals and goody bags were such a lovely treat at the end of a fabulous event. It just goes to show how positive and encouraging the triathlon community is and to have such a special event on our doorstep is so great. We will definitely be there next year! Will you?!

This mornings triathlon at 5:30am! Well done to all participating and every volunteer. Big up Christopher Nicholas on putting this all together. Personal thanks to Summer and Spencer Dorian for helping with filming.
